REFEREES

Some clubs are reporting a last 10-minute panic with no referee at the game with kick off 10 minutes away. The Referee’s Secretary has asked for referees to be at the game at least 30 minutes before kick off to check the pitch condition given the recent and future weather and the nets and to talk with both managers and linesmen.

Please could all referees remember to get a copy of the team sheet before commencement of the games and keep for future reference.

RESPECT CAMPAIGN

THE BWDFL fully endorses the FA Respect Campaign so would like to see all teams doing the RESPECT handshake with the opposition before the game commences.

TEAM SHEETS

It is a league requirement to complete a BWDFL team sheet and to hand to the referee no later than 15 minutes before kick-off. If you need to get some more forms they are available from the fixtures secretary at the league.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PITCHES

Parking in Preston Park (Brighton)

INFORMATION FROM BRIGHTON COUNCIL

This is becoming an issue again. Especially at weekends when cars are driven down Lime Tree Walk (that’s the internal road running into the park from the north east car park) and parking there, or even driven across the grass from the A23 and parking under the trees. This is not good for the trees’ roots which can become compacted. And it’s potentially dangerous for park users of course, particularly little ones. Our committee has asked the Preston Park councillors for their help in pressing for rigorous parking enforcement at weekends to discourage this. The councillors were quick to respond to this - thank you - and there should now be effective enforcement. Let us know if it’s any better please.

BEVENDEAN PARK

The Brighton League will not be using Bevendean Park until major repairs have been carried out on the playing surface at this present time the ground is dangerous for players and match officials

NEWS STORIES

The League are very keen to get clubs involved with the weekly newsletter so if you know of an interesting story about a player or a team or anything football related the League would like to include it in the weekly newsletter and updates.

WEEKLY NEWS AND MATCH PRESS RELEASE

Season 2017-18     Issue: 55 – Saturday 9Th December 2017

CUP COMPETITIONS

SCFA INTERMEDIATE CUP ROUND 4

As I mentioned in the last newsletter the quality of the teams left in the County Cups is at a very high standard. The league’s last team left in this competition Romans United were comprehensively beaten 8-1 by Angmering Seniors who still have a 100% record in the Premiership of the West Sussex Saturday League, Rob Partridge being the scorer for Romans today.

J W Whittington Charity Cup 2

Four games played today produced 27 goals. There also some very tight matches with two decided on penalties. Maybridge won 4-1 on penalties following a 3-3 draw AET against a revitalised Brighton Lights side. FC Sporting were 5-3 winners over St Mary’s thanks to Declan Brewster who scored 4 goals. Dragons won 5-3 on penalties with the score being 3-3 AET against Lancing United Reserves. In the final game in form The Lectern had an unusual day going down 5-0 at home to lower league placed Broadwater Athletic. Laurie Claydon, League President reports that the Broadwater Athletic win was remarkable in the fact that they have lost twice lost by four-goal margins, but more surprisingly this followed ten consecutive wins by The Lectern.

CHARITY CUP 3

AFC Sparta won 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 1-1 away to Brighton Electricity. Andrew Cole in fine form again with the goal for AFC Sparta.

Premier League

Just the two games played today saw Goring by Sea beat Worthing Town Reserves 3-0 and Ovingdean were 2-0 winners against The View played at Preston Park.

Division 1

Northbrook v St Peters was the only game played in this league today due to the other teams being in league action. Northbrook were 4-0 winners in the game played at Glebelands. Laurie Claydon, the League President has put together a short match report which features later in the newsletter.

Division 2

Once again just one game played today, and this saw AFC Broadwater and Clarendon Athletic play out a 2-2 draw at Northbrook Park West.

MATCH REPORTS

LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Northbrook (1) 4   St Peters (0) 0

Northbrook did most of the first half attacking but scored only once through Bally Brown direct from a free kick.   The side's superiority was reflected with the scoring of three second half goals in their 4-0 win through Jacob Atterbury from another Brown free kick, by Keiran Denyer when set up by Hayden Briggs and from a Jack Neave drive with the last kick of the game.

WEEKLY NEWS AND MATCH PRESS RELEASE

Season 2017-18     Issue: 57 – Saturday 2nd DEcember 2017

CUP COMPETITIONS

SCFA JUNIOR CUP 3

Six of the league’s teams went into the third round of the County Cup today.

Unfortunately only one of the sides went through which was The Lectern who overcame a very good AFC Vardenians side 3-2 played at Patcham Place. Diversity United went down 6-2 to a very classy Icklesham Casuals team and the league chairman, Ian Farrell was at the game and his report is detailed later in this newsletter. FC Sporting suffered a home defeat 4-1 to West Hoathley and St Mary’s lost 3-0 to Slinfold. In the final two games Southwick Rangers lost by a single goal to Wadhurst United and Ridgewood go into round 4 with a 2-1 win over Lancing United Reserves.

As someone who has experienced a team getting to the final of this cup the level and quality of teams after round two is quite impressive, with county reserve teams and top teams from leagues around Sussex looking to get to the final.

J W Whittington Charity Cup 2

The only game played in tis cup today saw Boys Brigade Old Boys beat Goring St Theresas 2-0 away at Northbrook Park East.

Premier League

Four games played today with league leaders AFC Sparta remaining top following a 4-1 away win at Preston Park with Andrew Cole getting a hat trick. Second place Sompting won 2-1 against third placed Brighton Electricity. Romans United bounced back to form with a comprehensive 6-1 win at Goring Rec against Goring by Sea. Biggest winners on the day were 4th placed Ovingdean who were 6-0 winners against Worthing Town Reserves, Afolabi Williams scoring a fine hat trick.

Division 1

Clear league leaders Dragons were just winners by the odd goal in a 2-1 win against Broadwater Athletic who are eight places below them. Maybridge beat St Peters 3-2 and Hangleton II played out a 1-1 draw against Northbrook.

Division 2

In a 9 goal thriller top of the league Sompting II won by a single goal against revitalised but bottom of the league Brighton Lights. The second game produced 6 goals with Clarendon Athletic and East Worthing United ending 3 each with Josh Jones grabbing 3.

MATCH REPORTS

SUSSEX COUNTY FA JUNIOR CUP 3RD ROUND

Diversity United 2 – Icklesham Casuals 6

Icklesham Casuals made the long trip to Preston Park on Saturday ,and were rewarded with a comprehensive victory over Diversity United.

There was little to choose between the teams in the early exchanges, but Icklesham took the lead in the 10th minute, following good build-up play.

Diversity were soon level, Uyi Imade converting from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Icklesham re-gained the lead, scoring twice before half-time, but Diversity were still in touch shortly after half-time when Arnold Fombasso netted.

Although Diversity were far from outclassed, further goals by Icklesham made the game safe for them, although the 6-2 score line was a bit harsh on the home side.

Attendance on a reasonable day for the start of November was 5.

IAN FARRELL

LEAGUE CHAIRMAN

RESULT OF THE DAY

The Lectern for the second week running with their 3-2 win against Old Vardenians III and progress into the 4th round.

WEEKLY NEWS AND MATCH PRESS RELEASE

Season 2017-18     Issue: 53 – Saturday 25th November 2017

CUP COMPETITIONS

SCFA JUNIOR CUP 2

Just the one game today saw a strong Lectern team win 7-0 away to Northbrook and progress into the next round with a home tie against AFC Vardenians Thirds. Should be an interesting tie on the Bevendean Park pitch and if it rains this could work into The Lectern’s hands not even taking into consideration the Yeovil type slope. Good luck lads, you deserve a strong cup run!

CHARITY CUP 1

Well played The View who overcame Lancing United Reserves, who progressed to the final of the SCFA Junior Cup last season, with a 3-2 win at Preston Park. Wonder if the unpredictable bounce of the ball at Preston Park did any of the teams any favours?

Premier League

Three games played today with reports covering two of the featured games covered later in this newsletter. AFC Sparta and Ovingdean played out a 2-2 draw at Goring Rec and Brighton Electricity were 1-0 winners over Romans United at Withdean Stadium. In the final game at Sompting Rec, Sompting were 3-1 winners against Goring by Sea

Division 1

Great to see Jamie Cole carry on where he left off last season bagging a hat trick for Broadwater Athletic in their 5-0 win over Worthing BCOB. An unexpected result in the Hangleton FC II v Maybridge game saw Maybridge come away from Victoria Park with a 5-2 win, their second of the season. Dragons who are a strong side and leaders of the league go 6 points clear of Hangleton FC II with a 4-0 away win against St Peters

Division 2

East Worthing United beat St Marys’s 2-0 at Pond Lane. Goring St Thersas lost 2-1 to top of the table Sompting II at Northbrook Park West. Well done to Brighton Lights who had their second win of the season with an emphatic 4-1 away win to Southwick Rangers.

MATCH REPORTS

AFC SPARTA 2 - OVINGDEAN 2

AFC Sparta started the stronger and had most of the possession. They went 1 nil up after a missed clearance from the goalkeeper. Ovingdean then got their act together and were the better side for the rest of the match. Sparta scored early in the second half to make it 2-0 a goal scored by their best player, the no 7 ! Ovingdean got one back with a good finish from Joe our winger. Ovingdeans keeper then made a rash challenge in the box to give away a penalty that he then saved and shortly after assisted in the equaliser with a long ball from the back. Well done the keeper, any comments Steve?

Suzanne Bennet - Ovingdean

BRIGHTON ELECTRICITY 1 – ROMANS UNITED 0

It was the youth of Brighton Electricity against the experience of Romans United at Withdean Stadium on Saturday, with the home side prevailing 1-0 in a somewhat bad-tempered game.

There were few goal-scoring opportunities in the first half, before Jack Barber broke the deadlock on 27th minutes, beating the new Romans goalkeeper with a well-controlled shot. The half-time whistle was timely, because several players had disputed decisions made by referee Will Briers, and play became disjointed. In the second half Electricity were solid at the back, giving little space to the dangerous Romans forward Rob Partridge, there were few clear-cut chances. The win for Electricity was just about a fair reflection. The most disappointing aspect of the match was the amount of ill-discipline, which resulted in four cautions and it could easily have been more. Attendance on a very bright but cold day, was 3.

Ian Farrell – BWDFL League Chairman who attended the game.

RESULT OF THE DAY

The Lectern with their 7-0 away win in R2 of the County Cup and Brighton Lights wining their second game of the season.
